Upper Freehold Township, NJ (February 28th, 2022) – According to the New Jersey State Police, a vehicle traveling on the eastbound lanes of Davis Station lost control when approaching a curve in the region of Harvey Rd. The incident caused the vehicle to veer off the road, knock down a street sign, cut through a cedar tree, burst into flames, and finally came to a rest when hitting a utility pole.
New Jersey State Police, the Hope Fire Company of Allentown, along with Allentown-Capital Health EMS were called to the scene of the accident at approximately 2:30 p.m. Fortunately, the vehicle’s passengers were able to escape the combusted vehicle before first responders even made it to the scene. Once first responders reached the scene of the accident, the vehicle, a Range Rover, was fully engulfed in flames.
The vehicle’s occupants were seemingly uninjured but they were rushed to a local hospital for an evaluation. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. No other details about the accident or the well-being of those involved are known at this time.
When people think of a car accident, many are inclined to believe that most car accidents involve two or more vehicles. Contrary to common belief, however, about half of all auto accidents are single-vehicle accidents. Additionally, a vast majority of people tend to believe that single-vehicle accidents are not as serious as accidents involving more than one vehicle. Data, however, indicates otherwise. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), nationwide, 53 percent of all vehicle accident-related deaths in 2019 were the result of single-vehicle accidents.
Another common misconception involving single-vehicle accidents is that fault typically falls on the person who was driving the vehicle. While this can be true in some cases, there are many situations in which liability can fall onto another party, even in a single-vehicle accident.
Single-vehicle accidents can happen as a result of another’s negligence in a number of ways, but one of the most common ways is driver distraction. In today’s modern world, distraction is everywhere, including when behind the wheel. Whenever a person is texting while driving, looking up an address, adjusting the radio, or eating while driving, this will likely divert the driver’s attention off the road. Driver distraction is incredibly dangerous and it can lead to a driver swerving into other lanes. A person who tries to avoid a collision with a distracted driver can inadvertently collide with roadway dividers, traffic signs, poles, and even nearby trees.
Other drivers can also be found negligent in single-vehicle accidents when they drive the victim off the road as a result of road rage, speeding, or operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.
It is important to note that single-vehicle accidents can also happen for reasons beyond the driver’s control. For instance, an accident can happen because of an unmaintained roadway or a poorly constructed road. These accidents can also happen on an unsecured construction site.
Finally, a single-vehicle accident can also happen as a result of a defective vehicle design or a faulty vehicle part. Vehicle makers and vehicle part manufacturers have an obligation to produce and sell products that are safe for consumers. Sadly, many single-vehicle accidents happen as a result of defective tires, vehicle designs, faulty brakes, and faulty steering systems.
When a car combusts in an accident, it is likely that the vehicle has a defect in the fluid line or electrical system. Motor vehicles rarely catch fire in a collision. For this reason, it is imperative that a thorough investigation is conducted to ensure the right party is held liable for the accident and this is true regardless of the cause of the accident. Whenever a person is injured in a single-vehicle accident, he or she may still be eligible for supplemental compensation when there is enough evidence suggesting that another party caused the accident. Depending on the case, critical evidence that can help build a strong case against the potentially at-fault party includes pictures taken at the scene, video surveillance, a diligent assessment of the vehicle, witness testimony, police reports, medical assessments, and recall lists.
Undoubtedly, single-vehicle accidents must always be thoroughly investigated and this is in large part due to the fact that liability is not always clear in these types of cases.
